What is ISO certification you ask? ISO 9001:2008 certification is an international standard for quality management. Certification requires practices to meet policy. But, this isn’t as simple as it seems! It often takes businesses years to meet the ISO 9001:2008 standard. To become certified, a business must develop their quality management system to meet the ISO 9001:2008 standard, then pass rigorous third-party audits by an accredited registrar! These audits search for inconsistencies in policies and practices and force a business to continually improve their quality management system.
Because the FDA doesn’t regulate the eLiquid and electronic cigarette industries yet, there aren’t any specific pieces of legislation or policies that are enforced. So how do you tell if the company you’re buying from is manufacturing their products safely? The answer is that you’ll have to look for other certifications that back up a company’s claim to quality.
Now, that being said, ISO certification has nothing to do with the actual products themselves. ISO certification puts emphasis on how the business functions. This isn’t to say that the two aren’t related though… for example, ISO measures the procedures in a lab, like when lab equipment is cleaned or how materials are stored. By measuring the quality put into the steps of making a product, you can assume that the product itself is the sum of its parts!
Another way to check an see if your company is performing to high expectations is to check for GMPs or cGMPs. “Good Manufacturing Practice” or “GMP” are practices and the systems required to be adopted in pharmaceutical manufacturing, quality control, diagnostics, foods, pharmaceutical products, medical devices and tobacco products as regulated by the FDA.
AmericaneLiquidStore.com also exhibits cGMPs, but ours can be viewed a bit differently. Because we had to be audited as part of our ISO certification, we were also audited for cGMPs. When our procedures were inspected for quality, our cGMP standards were also critiqued as the means to our good practices.
