The uncertainty, though, is easily put to rest with a simple explanation of the purpose served by each component.
The Atomizer
An atomizer—to put it in the most basic terms possible—is a heating element. E-liquid is filtered into the atomizer, from the cartridge, where it is heated and released in the form of vapor. The atomizer is what gives the electronic cigarette its “smoke.”
The Cartomizer
As we previously established, vapor is created when the e-liquid transfers from the cartridge (where the juice is stored) to the atomizer (the heating element). But some electronic cigarette kits will also allow you to install a cartridge and atomizer in one, and this is known as a cartomizer. Get it? Cartridge + Atomizer = Cartomizer.
Some models will only allow you to use separate cartridges and atomizers, while other models favor the cartomizer arrangement. Still others, like the Joye 510 and the Joye eGo, give you the option of choosing a cartomizer or atomizer + cartridge, depending on your personal preference.
Finding the Right Component
There are a lot of electronic cigarettes and electronic cigarette parts to choose from, and it’s very important to select compatible parts when replacing atomizers and/or cartomizers. Always consult your manual, or shop for parts specifically designated for your e-cig model, because it’s not enough simply to know whether your device takes an atomizer or cartomizer. Atomizers and cartomizers are not universal, and each one is tailored to a specific type of e-cigarette.
